A while back--one of my earliest reviews, in fact--I reviewed Tamora Pierce's fantastic Song Of The Lioness Quartet. In that series, taking place earlier in the land of Tortall, our heroine Alanna wished to be a knight, but it was unacceptable for girls to do so. She was forced to pretend to be her twin brother in order to go to training. Now, in the aftermath of her story, she made it possible for girls to become knights. In First Test, we meet Keladry, the first one to take up the opportunity.
Kel struggles to show that she is just as good as the boys she trains with; meanwhile, they bully her and refuse to accept her. There's a chance she won't make it as a Page, because she's been put on probation her first year. I always have to list Pierce's Tortall novels as my favorites; they're simply the best! The Protector Of The Small Quartet continues in Page.
